Our school district is studying the life of Abraham Lincoln, commemorating his 200th birthday. Even -L-'s KG class is learning about him. I go help in the class on Fridays. Here is a conversation that the teacher told me went on.
-L-'s teacher was talking about Lincoln and how blacks were emancipated. Her teacher talked about blacks, that they have darker skin. -L- said her dad is black. (I think -L- meant dark, living in this area, not many people have dark skin, so I think this is the closest that any of the kids might have been able to relate. Sad, I know, that there is not much diversity here.) One of the little fair skinned, blonde hair boys raised his hand and said his dad was black. The teacher said, "uh, I don't think so." Then he said, "yes he is, when he comes home from work, he is all black" Had to laugh. His dad must be a mechanic or something.
